Residential conversions are an exciting personal adventure for a homeowner. There are several reasons why someone might want to convert an existing room, garage, or extension, and it is our job to ensure their needs are met perfectly.
What is a conversion?
A residential conversion is the process of transforming a particular room, usually a garage, loft, or other space not directly connected to the main living area, into additional living space.
Some of the most common requests for conversions include creating an office space for homeworking, an additional bedroom for larger families, and home gyms or cinemas.
Since lofts and garages are typically used for storage, they often do not have insulation or plug sockets. Conversion work is all about taking this into account and providing you with an easily liveable space with everything they would expect.
What is the house conversion process?
While the specific process for different conversions can differ depending on the purpose of the room before and after our work, the general idea is the same for all our conversion projects.
We will work closely with you to understand your main aims for the space and clearly discuss a timeframe and budget before moving to complete the work with as little disruption as possible.
The first step is for our designers to get in touch to discuss your vision for your new living space, including the materials we will need and any additional requirements, such as electrical wiring or water mains connectivity.
Following that, our team will provide a comprehensive yet simple quotation for the work. Once agreed, we will source the necessary materials required for the work, including insulation, plaster, light fixtures, and more. We’ll also ensure that we have all the safety equipment we need to protect you and your home.
Next, we will carry out the agreed work to the highest quality possible. We will handle the floor, ceiling, and everything in between, from insulating your walls to laying carpet all while minimising disruption to your daily life.
Finally, we will fully clean the construction area so that you use it, removing any dust, plaster, or other residue so that your new living space is in the condition you would expect.
How do we approach house conversions?
We know that your home is your safe space and happy place. It is ultimately where you spend the majority of your time, which is why you should do everything you can to make it your favourite place to be!
Our specialist team of design experts are highly trained in both conversion and extension work for residential properties. Their expertise allows us to prepare for any kind of conversion work, including garages, lofts, spare rooms, and home office conversions in Birmingham and across the West Midlands.
We will work with you to understand your desired layout (if you have one) and visions for the room once the conversion is completed, designing your conversion in accordance with those ideas.
Take a garage-to-office conversion as an example – if you knew where you wanted to put your workstation and you knew you’d want to have a large whiteboard on the wall, then we could specifically design free wall space in the area you’d need it and ensure there are several accessible plug sockets in the area around your desk.
We will also help maximise the space you have available, ensuring you get the best out of your conversion and even suggesting possible ways to use it to the fullest. Reach out if you’re looking for anything from basement to garage conversions in Birmingham!

How can you prepare your home for a conversion?
To ensure that the conversion process is as smooth and non-disruptive as possible, we would suggest taking a few steps prior to our arrival.
Firstly, keeping the space tidy and empty so that we can get started with our work right away will help reduce the time we take to get started. Since many home conversions take place on old storage rooms (garages, sheds), there may be several items that could get in the way.
This saves us needing to empty it out when we first arrive, which could take a significant amount of time, and stops you suddenly having a lot of possessions that need to be stored elsewhere!
Secondly, making the area as easy as possible for our staff to access, even when you may not be home, can help us finish the project much faster. If we are carrying out a garage conversion, try leaving a side-gate or other access point open to make it easier for us to transport the materials we need at any time!
Lastly, we will work within all expected timeframes and budgets while causing as little disruption as possible, but please inform us of any times or dates where you will need us to pause our work ahead of time. This will help us keep you updated with expected completion dates and help minimise disruption even further!
